A wrong-way driver caused a two-car crash that killed one and injured three others in a second vehicle, according to Dallas county Sheriff’s Department.

J. Macias was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 45 around 2:30 a.m. when his red pickup truck slammed into a sport utility vehicle near the intersection of Loop 12, investigators said.

The driver of the SUV, L. Alvarado was killed in the crash. Two passengers in his vehicle were transported to the local hospital where one was reported in serious condition.

Macias was hospitalized as well, although the extent of his injuries is unknown.

Alcohol may have been a factor, said a statement from the Sheriff’s Department, but test results are still pending. He does have a prior charge of driving under the influence from March 1997.
