The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has warned the public to avoid eating alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts produced by Tiny Greens Organic Farm due to a possible salmonella contamination.

The outbreak has been tied to at least 94 cases of illness in 16 states. More than half the cases have been in Illinois. There have been no deaths reported.

The recall includes 4 oz and 5 lb. containers sold to various customers, including farmers’ markets, restaurants and grocery stores.

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most persons recover without treatment. Infants, the elderly and those with impaired immune systems are at greatest risk of severe illness from salmonella infection.

Consumers are urged not to consume these recalled products. They should be discarded in a sealed contain so that people and animals cannot eat them.

The CDC has posted epidemiological information about this outbreak. And they also have more information about how sprouts may not be healthy for everyone.

Also, J&D Produce of Edinburg, Texas, has recently recalled its Little Bear brand curly parsley and cilantro. Tests of the products in Quebec, Canada and in Detroit detected salmonella contamination.
