Parents Sue Joshua School District For Son’s Suicide

A wrongful death lawsuit has been brought against the Joshua school district accusing school officials of ignoring repeating acts of bullying against Jon Carmichael, 13, who committed suicide last year.

The suit, filed in Dallas, by Carmichael’s parents is on the first anniversary of his deak and seeks damages and compensation for his estate.

School employees failed to intervene on his behalf although he was harassed repeatedly – including several instances in which he was placed upside down in a toilet and had “his head flushed.”

School officials failed to intervene when he was bullied in physical education class and when he was thrown into a Dumpster, the lawsuit claims. In another incident, students saw — but did not report — that his head was placed upside down in a toilet and "flushed several times," it says.

Perhaps the most horrifying allegation involves one bullying incident that was posted on the Internet.

"Just prior to his death, he was stripped nude, tied up and again placed into a trashcan," the lawsuit says. "The event was videotaped, put on YouTube but was later taken down, at the direction of an unknown staff member, who also failed to report the incident."

The attorney who filed the suit, said school officials were aware about many of the bullying incidents, then ignored or covered up other ones they didn’t witness firsthand.

Jon, an eighth-grader at Joshua’s Loflin Middle School, hanged himself last March in his family’s barn near Cleburne, south of Fort Worth.

This is one of those stories that has really stuck with me. It’s so very sad that kids can be so cruel… My thoughts are with his family.
