Insect Contamination Prompts Similac Formula Recall

Abbott Laboratories announced a voluntary recall of 5 million containers of Similac powdered infant formula, after beetles were found in the products and in a Michigan plant where they are made.

The contaminated formula poses no immediate health risk, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But infants who drink it may experience an upset stomach and refusal to eat, so the company is recalling the formula as a precaution.

The infant formulas included in the recall:

· Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.

· Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

The recall involves only the powered formulas listed above, not any of the liquid products.

Information for Parents and Caregivers

· Products with affected lot numbers should be returned to Abbott.

· Parents and caregivers can go to www.similac.com/recall or call Abbott’s consumer hotline, (800) 986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The recall is limited to the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean, Abbott said.

Do you think that possibly the imprinted code
numbers could be made a little darker/larger so
they can be read better for clarification?
