Windstar Vans Recalled By Ford For Steering Problems

Comments Off

More than 500,000 older model Windstar minivans are being recalled by Ford Motor Co., in cold-weather states, to fix brackets and mounts that could separate from the vehicle’s subframe causing loss of steering control.

The recall affects 1999 to 2003 year minivans. Of the minivans recalled, 425,000 are registered in the U.S., 100,000 in Canada and fewer than 750 in other countries, Ford said.

To date, the company has received seven incident reports that involved five minor injuries in which drivers allege the corrosion-related issue was a contributing factor.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it has received 87 reports of corrosion-related failures of the front frame and 74 unique incident reports as of last month.

Ford will begin notifying owners in mid-February to bring their minivans to dealerships for inspection and repairs, if required.

This follows a Ford recall in August of about 600,000 1998-2003 Windstars in Snow Belt states and Canada because the rear axles can corrode and break.
